I made it much easier for everyone to follow. So then, let's get going:
1. Create a new 640x480 pixels in Illustrator CS3 document by clicking File>New Document, then name the file “Glassy_button”.
2. Grab the Rounded rectangle tool. Click on the work space area. A dialog box will show. Enter the
Number as shown in the image below, and click OK.
3. Position the Rounded rectangle that we made earlier in the upper area of our work space by using the move tool also known as the black arrow tool.
4. As it is selected by the black arrow tool, now apply a drop shadow, by going to the Effect that’s on the upper menu and select > Stylize > Drop Shadow. Then, enter the corresponding number that you can see below and Click on OK.
5. Now you will see that our Rounded rectangle box has a nice drop shadow. But wait, I can see
a stroke surrounding our Rounded rectangle. It sure bothers me… we need to fix it so click on the stroke icon in the top right corner of the screen. And choose none.
And there it is a very nice drop shadow indeed.
6. Oh no! Why is it color white???!!!Well don’t worry guys we just need to change the fill of this object. While the Rounded rectangle is selected, choose the illustrator Window and check the Gradient. A Gradient palette will show in the workspace “see figure a.3”. But if it’s already had been opened you will see it somewhere in your right side palette. In the Gradient palette, choose Type> Linear. And in the Angle type in 90 which is equivalent to 90 degrees. Click on the black slider the location of this is 100% while when you choose the white one and change it to #D9DADB on the fill icon in the palette and back to our gradient palette it should be at Angle 90 degrees at 0% in location.
7. Using the white arrow tool or the Direct Selection Tool Click The Rounded rectangle shape to be able to select it. Holding down the ALT Key drag the object to be able to duplicate it. There we have the duplicate selected. In the layers palette delete the layer style by dragging the circle to the Trash can below this palette:
8. Next, grab the Rectangle tool. Make a Rectangle that’s the same size with our duplicate Rounded rectangle. Place it like the one in the "image a.6" and change the color as long as it’s a dark one.
As the duplicate Rounded rectangle and the colored Rectangle is selected use the align menu click the “Horizontal align center”and the” Horizontal distribute center”to make sure that they are bought Align at each other.
9. Now open the pathfinder in the Illustrator window if it is not still open in the layers palette. Click on the “Subtract from shape area” then, click on the “Expand”. In your work area the Rectangle should look like the one like "b.2 image."
10. By using the white arrow tool or the direct selection tool, click the newly created shape. And press the Up arrow on your keyboard. Then grab your black arrow tool or the move tool and adjust each side a little bit. And change the opacity to 45% till it look likes the figure below.
11. Duplicate the shape. Grab the Rotate tool and place it like "figure c.1" and grab the black arrow tool adjust the height like this in "figure c.2" then repeat instruction number 8-9. But, this time around place the Rectangle shape above the instance of what may act as shadow to our Rounded rectangle. Select the 3 objects then group by right clicking on it a dialog box will appear. Go and click on the Group. The result should be like "figure c.2." Lastly Use the Type tool and type whatever you want make sure that the color of the fill is black. Adjust the opacity to 50%.
Yippee! At last, there is it our very nice yet so simple Glassy Button. I hope this will help you a lot. And encourage you that using Illustrator is just easy. See you again in our next tutorial.
